Light Guide Optics International Manufacturing Facility in Līvāni – a Place Where Science Becomes Technology
One of the world’s leading manufacturers of medical optical fibers, Light Guide Optics International, has created a new production facility that stands as a vivid example of how high technology, science, and thoughtfully designed building shading solutions come together to form a comfortable, energy-efficient, and aesthetically refined working environment.
Light Guide Optics International Manufacturing Facility in Līvāni – Contemporary Industrial Architecture with WAREMA Solutions
From a Glass Factory to World-Class Innovations
Light Guide Optics International traces its roots back to the 1980s, when an experimental optical fiber unit was established at the Līvāni Glass Factory. Today, the company provides a full production cycle – from concept development and prototyping to serial manufacturing, employing around 300 highly qualified specialists.
A Manufacturing Facility with a Vision for the Future
In 2019, the company acquired the former Līvāni biochemical plant buildings, initiating a gradual reconstruction and adaptation to modern manufacturing requirements. The project involved architect Antra Saknīte, engineers O3FM and Citrus Solutions, Ainavu studija, design office H2E, and the construction team led by Rolands Sproģis. During the design process, co-creation workshops were organized, actively involving employees – the people who work in this environment every day.
MIKSI – A Space That Breathes Light
On the site of the former warehouse block, a medical device production unit with cleanrooms has been created, featuring expressive zigzag glazing inspired by the shape of the old warehouse ramp. Light plays a key role here – large glazed surfaces maintain visual contact with the outdoor environment and make the production process visible to company visitors.

A Façade That Responds to the Weather – WAREMA Automated Awnings for Building Comfort
Luxcontrol supplied and installed WAREMA façade awnings for this project, using technically advanced and sustainable solutions suitable for an industrial environment.
The façade integrates WAREMA awnings with automatic control.
Technical specifications:
-
WAREMA façade awnings with guide rails and ZIP system,
-
high wind resistance – up to 24 m/s,
-
screen fabric with 4% openness factor,
-
light grey fabric and structure color, harmonized with the building exterior.
The building is equipped with Omnexo blind control, ensuring automatic operation via a weather station. Based on predefined parameters and solar intensity, the awnings automatically lower to reduce excessive light indoors. In strong wind conditions, the blinds retract upwards and are concealed in the cassette. Behind the decorative perforated façade panels, ventilation air intake grilles, technical gas installations, and other technical elements are hidden. The main entrance canopy is designed with a mirrored surface, symbolically referencing the transmission of light through optical fiber.
An Environment That Invites Work and Relaxation
The factory grounds have been transformed into a well-maintained, green environment. The former warehouse access road has become a pedestrian street, surrounded by gardens and new plantings. The dining area with extensive glazing merges with the outdoor space, giving employees an almost park-like atmosphere.
People at the Heart of a Dream Factory
The entire project is based on one core idea – creating an environment where people feel good. Modern technologies, functional layouts, and aesthetic solutions help shape a manufacturing facility that is not only efficient but also inspiring. Light Guide Optics International is a vivid example of how an industrial building can become a continuation of modernist values and a benchmark for future workplaces.
